THE EUROPEAN REFORMATION - OBERAMMERGAU VERSION - 2010

12 days incl. travel, or 11 days from Geneva to Munich (TLO)

Vacation Overview

This is the perfect vacation to learn about the European Reformation. Start your trip in Geneva with a welcome dinner and an orientation tour that includes Geneva’s Reformation Monument and St. Peter’s Cathedral, where John Calvin served. Then, travel to Zurich and visit Grossmunster Church, the mother church of the Reformation in Switzerland under Ulrich Zwingli, and Fraumunster Church, known for Chagall's stained-glass windows. In Germany, take pictures of Heidelberg Castle, then continue to Worms to visit the cathedral, Trinity Church, and the famed Reformation Monument. Travel to Mainz to visit the Gutenberg Museum and to see original copies of the Bible.

On this tour, enjoy a visit to the Coburg Fortress in Coburg and in Erfurt, visit the Augustinian Monastery, where Luther lived as a monk. A scenic highlight is a Rhine cruise, where you cruise past castle-crested cliffs, terraced vineyards, and trim, half-timbered towns. In Eisleben, visit two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the house where Luther was born and the Sterbehaus Museum, home of his last residence. Also visit St. Andrew's Church, where Luther preached his last sermon, and the St. Peter and Paul Church, where he was baptized. In Wittenberg, enjoy a guided walking tour featuring the Reformation Museum, Luther House, St. Mary's Church where he preached, Castle Church where he hung his 95 Theses, and Luther's tomb. Next, stop in Eisenach to visit Wartburg Castle, where Luther translated the Bible; the Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach Memorials; the house where Luther lived during grammar school; and more.

Spend two nights in Nuremberg, the first town to accept the Reformation in 1525, and visit the famous Lutheran Lorenz Church. Take an excursion to picturesque Rothenburg, with time to shop for the Christmas ornaments for which this town is famous. Travel to Augsburg, where a sightseeing tour reveals the city where Luther and his followers proclaimed their beliefs. Then via Augsburg, travel to Oberammergau for the highlight of your vacation: the original Passion Play—performed every 10 years by the community of Oberammergau. All Globus guests enjoy first-class seats at the Passion Play performance and hotel space in the town of Oberammergau. This is once-in-a-lifetime vacation opportunity!
